1. Phil Ledgerwood

Describe yourself

I am a developer geek turned business owner and agile coach. I still write code, but most of my interests these days are helping people get their software projects off the ground from both a process and management perspective (as well as general all-around nerdery).

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I really enjoy mentoring, both the activity of it and the relationships you form because of it.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

A growth mindset is about maximizing your potential, which is something I focus on as a coach. There is always a better future state to get to if we’re willing to listen to others and put in the work.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

It would be how to structure software development operations for maximum humanity and efficiency (humanity first).

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

During an MVP workshop, there was a department head who insisted that everything they wanted was of maximum (i.e. equal) business value, specifically regarding prioritizing two very different features.

Instead of arguing about the perceived value of these features, I asked, “If we had a race between two of your teams to see who was fastest, would they need Feature A to have the race?” They said, “Yes.” I asked, “How about Feature B?” There was a long pause, and in a mystified voice, they said, “Well, no!” That person went on to help define a very small MVP and became a champion for that way of thinking about the development project.

Describe yourself

I’m a full-stack growth marketer with an array of experience across demand, inbound, lifecycle, and ops primarily in tech startups. I have a passion for deeply understanding customers and user journeys to accelerate acquisition and expansion through innovative campaigns. I’ve been wearing the player-coach hat for 10 years and I’ve dabbled in B2B, B2C as well as B2B2C business models. I also run a podcast called Humans of Martech with a mission to future-proof the humans behind the tech and help them have successful and happy careers in marketing.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

Having been fortunate enough to have outstanding mentors and an expedited career progression, I now aspire to give back.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

To me, a growth mindset is someone who’s always seeking to learn and better themselves. Someone who takes on challenges in areas they are unfamiliar with and sees failures as learning opportunities.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

How to find success in your marketing role and career while remaining happy and balanced in life.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

At one of my first startups, we had the challenge of appealing to multiple personas, finance managers, marketers, sales reps, and HR teams. So writing compelling and personalized messaging showing all the different use cases was really tricky.

Here’s what we did: For users who started a trial we asked them their job title and we then sent a welcome email on behalf of an internal team member who works in the same department. The email was conversational and spoke to the unique use cases of that specific department and examples of how they used the product themselves. Still the best-performing email I’ve ever written.

3. Paul Forrest

Describe yourself

I have an extensive and proven track record and am regarded as a person bringing creativity, innovation, and excellence to everything I do in equal measure.

Hardworking and sometimes a visionary, I think my unique approach and dedication to my craft is more about being a polymath and I think it’s this that makes me a sought-after leader and influencer in business.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I can confidently say that becoming a growth mentor to startup founders is one of the most fulfilling activities I have chosen to pursue – sharing my knowledge and experience, helping build successful businesses, and contributing to the growth of the entrepreneurial community is genuinely fulfilling!

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

To me, a growth mindset means that I believe abilities and talents can be developed through lifelong learning, dedication, and hard work rather than fixed traits that limit potential.

A growth mindset is about fostering a positive attitude towards learning, a love for personal growth, and a passion for achieving goals.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

I would mentor on the topic of ‘purpose’. Helping a founder understand their core values, strengths, and passions and helping them translate them into goals and actions is truly rewarding.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

Amid the Covid pandemic, decontaminating medical facilities presented numerous challenges, especially for ambulances.

However, by drawing on my experience working with a business that had created a revolutionary group vaping device, I recognized the potential for the device to be tweaked to facilitate highly effective ‘hazing’ for sanitizing purposes.

In addition, I had previously collaborated with a company that had produced a powerful, non-toxic, organic cleaning solution for beer lines that was capable of destroying all surface-based germs.

By bringing together these two solutions, I was able to develop an ingenious, low-cost product that could sanitize facilities up to 30 times faster than traditional methods – all while requiring little to no staff involvement.

The result was a truly automated, highly effective, and easily deployed solution to a major problem.

Working at Processica I was deeply involved in messengers market competitor analysis. Meanwhile, I was also discovering the pricing of Top market messenger and It occurs just by moving all company’s users from Slack+Gsuite to Microsoft Teams saving the company of 75 people almost 30 000 per year (12,5 $ Slack for Business/per user + 18 $ Gmail Business Plus/per user)*75*12month= 27 450 $). So we switch to Microsoft Teams really fast and I know the company working using it still for 3 years so, in the end, the company budget saving turns 100 000.

9. John Wessel

Describe yourself

I love working with companies to help them use data to create sustainable growth from validated learning. I like to help people set clear goals (OKRs) and use agile practices to grow sustainably.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I’m looking to pay it forward by helping others and also learning from others in the process.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

A growth mindset means the pie is fixed. This is not a zero-sum game. There does not need to be only winners or losers. The world is infinite with infinite possibilities. The growth mindset keeps us focused on the things we can change and make better every day and away from the things we cannot change.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

The power of data in growing your business. You need to understand where and why your company has been successful and try to continue replicating that success. If you don’t know why you are successful, you will simply be guessing as you try new things. More specifically – detailed marketing attribution and the power of a customer data platform.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

Discovered and implemented a solution to reverse proxy our customer data collection tool (rudder stack) to use our domain. This increased our data accuracy as ad blockers were blocking data from flowing into our CDP and data warehouse.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I believe in helping others to shorten the road to expertise, and paying it forward!

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

I think a growth mindset is one that is always shifting and changing. I have known people that stopped learning and exploring at some point and decided that their brain was all full. I believe it takes some humility to admit you don’t know everything, but mostly a desire to learn new things over and over and over.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

Interpersonal relationships and communication. I have managed hundreds of individuals in large and small organizations, and I believe I have gotten to know them very well through common tactics and genuine empathy. Communication and empathy are skills that can be improved with effort.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

Describe yourself

I’ve dedicated my entire career to experimentation and user research. I have knowledge of many topics in the digital realm due to my intentionally curated experience over the course of several years. I recently went out on my own and started a business. I’m all about authenticity and smashing boxes as a woman-owned business in a male-dominated industry – as I’ve been put into too many boxes in the past. I want to be different, elevate the industry, and elevate how agency work is done.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I LOVE helping and teaching others as my career wouldn’t be where it’s at today without others doing it for me.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

Having a growth mindset is imperative to success. There’s no way around it. You must be open-minded. You must be willing to embrace challenges. You must be okay with feeling uncomfortable sometimes. You must put your ego aside. You must push yourself. Growth should be continuous throughout the duration of life, and it pays dividends.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

I would pick experimentation. There are so many people doing this work poorly or incorrectly. That needs to change. I want to help elevate teams as much as possible.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

More customers at one of my previous companies needed much more strategic help than what they were receiving. They also needed more resources on their teams without hiring people full-time. I started an entirely new service line solo to address these issues for our customers.

I’m a Product Manager in love with 0-1, validation, and the quest for Product-Market fit. I’d love to help 1M people express themselves through entrepreneurship since I believe this would make the world a lot better!

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

Sparring is the most valuable way of learning I found! I’d like to stay sharp by mentoring more (I’ve been a 1h/month volunteering mentor for more than 1 year now, and I love it).

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

I’d reply with my favorite quote by Linus Pauling, a guy who just won 2 Nobel prizes 😃: “The way to get good ideas is to get lots of ideas and throw the bad ones away”.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

Rapid validation of ideas. It would be this because it is the single thing I’ve done badly the most in my career. I’ve always practiced the lean startup, often without having a clear understanding of how long an MVP should last, how to define success metrics, and how much effort is to get into this. After a massive amount of mistakes, I think I could help and this is my secret weapon.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

I was working on a logistics SaaS for e-commerce. I noticed many of them had to re-create labels from previous shipments. After interviewing them I discovered it was because of returns that had to follow different workflows based on the return policies of each company.

We created and tested a way for them to state their policies in a no-code, LEGO-like way based on triggers and conditions. Based on these, an embeddable form was created for them to place on their website, where their customers could create returns and substitutions and print labels accordingly to the e-commerce policy. It was easy for both to interact with and it solved a massive headache and email exchanges to both.

Describe yourself

I am a Turkish person living in Dubai for more than 7 years now. I am married, have 2 cats, and am passionate about Martial Arts. Worked in multiple industries having 10+ years of experience in the data field.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I like to inspire people.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

The most fundamental part of having a growth mindset is, being honest with yourself. If you don’t know boxing, you won’t show up for advanced class, you will start beginner. Admitting this to yourself, not only in physical encounters but also in mental situations where you can get away by simply talking cheap, is the first step to personal growth.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

I can’t name a topic since every situation will have its own dynamics – one solution that worked for me might not work for other people however the approach is going to be similar. Topics are mean, and approach is the way.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

Most of the time, I don’t say “I’m pretty good” cause most of the things are being done as a team in the companies. I don’t like people writing, “I grew the company 2x by implementing xyz” into their CVs/Resumes.
However, as a team, building our in-house solutions for personalization made me proud.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

A growth mindset means always seeking ways to fail, failing fast, and keep hunting for the path to success.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

Managing business fundamentals and cash. My startup had a great product that was high in demand by our customers. However, scaling that product and staff, while maintaining spending levels and holding onto cash was a critical element to our success.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

My (former) company provides marketing as a service. This is extremely attractive to customers since they don’t have to risk over-staffing and building expertise. We work as an extension of their team. I assist early and mid-stage startup founders in scaling revenue. My focus is on business development, go-to-market strategy, customer development, strategic partnerships, and technology sales. Working with passionate revenue leaders, I aim to expand their capacity for getting things done from strategic planning to hands-on execution.

Startups, strategy, systems, and sales make me curious.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

With entrepreneurs/founders, I aspire to share my experience, skill set, processes, and systems developed over 15+ years as a go-to-market and revenue operator in the startup ecosystem.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

Problem-solving. Continuous learning. Scalable frameworks. Evaluate. Tweak. Repeat.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

Go-To-Market strategy and execution – to scale revenues.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

Introduced a LatAm SaaS startup to APAC/Aus. Deployed account-based marketing, sales, and partnership strategy. With a focus on copywriting, emails, and partnerships, grew the revenue to a 6-figure dollars ARR.

Hey, I’m Rosie – Product Growth Lead at Peanut. I love conversion optimization, onboarding, activation, and monetization challenges. Happiest when I’m running a growth process & helping others grow. Message me to chat about anything growth/product.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

Would love to give back and gain experience in the challenges others’ are having across industries.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

Being as happy with a failed experiment as with a success. Taking everything as learning and constantly improving.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

Monetisation (B2C subscriptions, one-off consumables, and pricing tests).

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

Working as growth lead at Ferry, a sex therapy app for women, we struggled to reach a good LTV:CAC ratio. I then thought – where’s the issue? Are people not getting to our purchase screen, or do they drop off on the screen itself? After analysis, we saw a huge % of users were not even seeing our subscription. So we moved it into onboarding and saw an 8X increase in conversion from install – paid. From then, we had the beginnings of validating a performance marketing growth loop as we drastically increased our LTV.

Describe yourself

Hey! I’m Ray—Founder of DSLX: a creative content agency for SMBs. I’ve been building and growing content teams for 8+ years. I know what great content is, what it isn’t, and how teams can harness it to win a front-row seat in hearts, minds, and inboxes.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I do content, and I do it exceptionally well, I’d like to show other businesses how they can build content teams and strategies that beat the bots.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

A growth mindset means benchmarking against yourself. Don’t run anyone else’s race. Your business is on its unique journey, and only you are responsible for its trajectory.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

Building winning content teams & strategies.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself.

Gather ’round, let me tell you about Bungalow: a DSLX client that provides long-term room and home rental services across the US.

As a relatively new player in the rentals game, Bungalow wanted to rank for their key cities. However, beating players like Airbnb and Booking was going to be tough.

We strategized how they could build content that would rank for reasons beyond keywords & queries. The result was 21 niche city guides. Each broke down and rated popular neighborhoods across 11 different factors: schools, walkability, crime, and more.

Our in-depth research led to 500k+ UPVs in 10 months, with many of their core cities ranking 1st-3rd place for their specific search terms.

It was a prime example of great storytelling content paired with unique research (local interviews, forums, documentaries, and more). It’s something no AI will ever be able to replicate and a firm reminder of the human touch content will forever need.
