1. Anoop Sudhakaran

Describe yourself

Hey there!

I am a growth marketer by profession. I’ve helped several B2B, SaaS, & D2C companies realize their marketing potential.

I am a problem solver at heart, I use my creative and technical brain to arrive at solutions (often unconventional).

My natural inclination to help people brings me onboard GrowthMentor. Looking forward to connecting with y’all.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

Helping others helps me learn more, it’s a win-win.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

A growth mindset according to me, is the urge to never stop learning, there’s always a new way to reach a goal. Keep looking.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

Simplifying marketing

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

As part of a company hackathon, my team “hacked” together a simple Optical Character Recognition app & lead identification API with our homegrown CRM to scan & qualify 1000s of visiting cards from offline events and reduced sales outreach time by 1 -2 months.

2. Ata Sergey Nowak

Describe yourself

Hey there I am Ata! A German-Turkish dual-national & trilingual who is passionate about games, history, space and intercultural communication. Nine years ago, my passion for games began to transform into a professional career. This was triggered by my first game modding experience for Paradox games in 2012. Since then I worked on several games like Hearts of Iron 3: Their Finest Hour, East vs West, Squad, Terminal Conflict and acclaimed mods like Black ICE and Project Reality.

Aside from my game development career, I also managed an international NGO that focused on European Union research projects and hosted many entrepreneurship events like Creative Coffee Ankara or TEDxHacettepeUniversity. After 2017, my main focus shifted towards forming a start-up company and creating a narrative RPG game about politics called Suzerain. We guided our product to a commercial release thanks to our talented as well as diligent team. It was critically acclaimed by VICE and PCGAMER as well as the playerbase.

Currently, I am managing my company Torpor Games while also providing services in consulting and event speaking regarding the software industry.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I’d like to disseminate the learnings and solutions to the challenges that I have experienced in the start-up journey in order to provide value.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

It is a constant struggle to improve on the service one provides while also increasing org capacity. Growth must be designed in a healthy manner where the organization and the product stand to benefit. This is a mindset of regular analysis, problem solving, and execution.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

It would be the correlation of team effort, strengths and weaknesses in correlation to the built service. The thesis and synthesis of both elements are where most of the great problems and solutions lie to unleash the potential. I also would provide strategic solutions on top of these to help advise.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

I saw the lack of interest in the subject of politics in society and figured a way to make a product with an emotional/personal twist in order to make society engage with subjects of governance, policies and subjects of importance about life.

My worry was that as individuals we were drifting too far away from the problems that plague us as societies. I made people care about a fictional country where they would step in the role of President. This indirectly made them more aware of subjects of political science in our universe.

It only achieved a dent at the massive problem but it also allowed me to observe that rather than be apolitical the engagement in governance is only increasing. The popularity of the product and academic acclaimed only confirmed this.

3. Dan Gray

Describe yourself

Hello world! With over 10 years of experience learning, tinkering and ultimately scaling startups of all shapes and sizes, I’m excited to work together to help you grow as a marketer and start unlocking wins for your team.

Articles promising quick wins and must try tests can be found anywhere, but I believe that having discipline and the right methodology for testing and learning is what will enable you to start growing and compounding the types of achievements that can catapult your career and company.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I want to take what I’ve learned over the past 10 years in regards to structuring and running effective testing and share it with others. I don’t believe in quick wins, I believe in process that enables finding compounded wins.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

I believe that a growth mindset means approaching every problem and opportunity with the perspective of “how can I leverage this to propel our primary metrics forward?”.

Whether that’s looking at your unboxing experience as a chance to generate referrals, evaluating how your Supply Chain impacts LTV or how your checkout can be improved to increase conversion rate, every part of your business, big or small, is a chance for compounding gains. A growth mindset is seeing that potential.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

Channel testing. If 2021 taught us one thing, it’s that a marketing mix heavily dependant on Facebook is no longer an option.

I want to help marketers unlock channel market fit for their business and find places to effectively invest their time and money to achieve the results they are looking for.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

Problem: We sell a product that is differentiated based on how it feels, but we primarily sell online. How do get our product in our potential customers hands for sampling?

Solution: We created a program called Pay It Forward, where our top ambassadors could send older discontinued products to their loved ones to get a taste of Kotn! Not only did we get a ton of virality from our customers, but we also generated press, engaged with a bunch of people not previously aware of Kotn and moved old product.

How to find the work that makes you jump out of bed in the morning to get started. Everyone can, and should get this fired up about something they’re working on.

Describe an out-of-the-box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

5. Elisa Viaud

Describe yourself

I have 15 years of professional experience with hypergrowth companies as Uber and Tesla. I’m an Organisational Psychologist and would love to share my knowledge with founders who want to build the best-in-class talent team. How to attract talent with non-existant Employer Brand, how to properly assess and consistently interview the right candidates, how to negotiate the offer while the candidate has a competitive one? How to structure compensation structure and which benefits are necessary for the beginning. How to asses people’s performance and motivate your talent to deliver “more with less”.

In just one sentence, why do you want to become a growth mentor?

I’d like to “pay it forward” and share my knowledge the same way as my mentors did with me earlier in my career.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

I read Carol’s Dweck book many years ago and since applying the Growth Mindset to pretty much all areas of my life. When it comes to the personal growth I do believe in talent but mostly I believe in persistence, consistent effort and humility, these principles help me to never stop learning.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

For individuals -Leadership and Career progression, for organizations – efficient talent strategy, hiring for cultural fit, strategies of belonging.

Describe an out-of-the-box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

Two years ago when Tesla first launched Model 3 in European markets my department had to hire 80 customer support associates speaking multiple languages in less than 30 days. I suggested inviting candidates for the on-site events where my team arranged small group activities, role-plays, exercises every 30 mins. At the end of 2h session, we would have at least 10 candidates who passed the multiple assessment criteria and will be hired at the end of the day. Instead of interviewing candidates one by one my department trained the hiring team on how to instantly grade each candidate in each exercise and therefore significantly reduced time to hire for such a population of candidates.

8. Ioana Birleanu

Describe yourself

As an immigrant woman with experience in business and technology in both corporate and entrepreneurial settings, I am at a stage in my life where I love contributing to our future while also learning from other executives and entrepreneurs.

My values are joy, impact and growth, and they permeate everything I do. I have a deep passion for authentic and conscious business practices. This has led me to leaving my executive corporate career and starting my own consulting business – I cherish the wonderful journey, learnings and community every day.

The main focus areas that I specialize in for any executive or entrepreneur are revenue and culture, all while also ensuring that anyone I work with attains their own vision of “Harmonious success”: a wonderful state of flow where we can all truly achieve all that we are capable of and love our best life.

In just one sentence, please tell us why you want to become a growth mentor?

Giving back is a core value that I live by, and I love sharing my experience with others while also learning from them.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

To me, a growth mindset means always being open to learning and progressing, while also enjoying our present moment and state. Life is a lot about the journey and less about the destination: reaching certain “milestones” always adds to our life, while also giving us new heights to grow towards.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

My favourite topic to mentor on is authentic sales practices. I truly believe that anyone with a good, consciously built product can put it out there in the world as their full self, and hence serve their clients in the best way possible. I love combining hard numbers and sales practices with mindset and self growth to achieve the best business results and personal happiness.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

Putting people first always leads to the best business results. While I was a sales director with Cisco Systems, a worldwide leader in the technology industry, we had challenges attracting and retaining diverse talent. I realized quickly that making diverse candidates feel comfortable and opening up the entire team to them was a great solution in seeing if we were a good fit for each other. Within one year, I was proudly leading the most diverse sales team in Cisco Canada. We also managed to exceed our quota in several consecutive years, and I have since stood firm on the conviction that culture and revenue are closely interwoven and are arguably the most important business components to focus on.

Describe yourself

I am a corporate finance expert with over 12 years in various positions (P&L, Cash flow and Balance Sheet analysis, forecasting, optimisation, budgeting and creating strategic plans) in finance teams of the largest beer company in the world (AB InBev), where I made my career from an analyst to a Director. I am also an expert in Revenue Management (Pricing, Margin pools, promo strategy, etc) and an AGILE projects business lead driving company transformation from waterfall to agile project management. I am passionate about developing, coaching and mentoring people, supporting their personal and professional growth.

In just one sentence, please tell us why you want to become a growth mentor?

I deeply enjoy sharing my knowledge with people and helping them grow personally & professionally.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

Growth mindset for me is to keep asking “WHY?” or “WHY NOT?”, challenging the status quo, always looking for improvement, taking any challenge or problem as an opportunity, which inevitably leads to growth.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

I would go for process improvements. While being an expert in Finance, I know that KPIs reporting can show you the health check, but not always the root cause. What is truly amazing is to understand the place where the issues is with financial results analytics and then analyse the process behind that department / area / etc. If we can improve the process, make it lean and more error proof, we can achieve truly long lasting results, efficiencies and growth.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

I took a role of the business lead of a very unsuccessful project. I realised that a thorough review is needed before moving ahead. Within 2 months I did a full health check of various KPIs, teams, processes and assumptions. This “”audit”” revealed major misunderstandings & miss-alignments between the cross functional teams.

A new design, roadmap & team structure was set up then which allowed major improvements supported by clearly defined KPIs to appear. The project received high appraisals by the senior leadership just a few months after and is still considered a major driver for the future growth.

Customer Success mainly but due to the other projects you can also chat with me about; lead generation, tools to use, starting your own business.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

We defined Tiers along with KPI’s and a maximum of MRR per CSM at one point which was a bit of a gamble (well thought out though with all the data).

After 6 months of implementation, it was the best thing we could have done as it gives the team the right priorities, the ability to give proper numbers to management and define more clear KPI’s.

12. Joshua Pitzalis

Describe yourself

Before I got into tech I used to help people deal with back pain. I started out as the guy who cleans weights up at the gym. Slowly worked my way up to a personal trainer. Ended up specializing as a corrective exercise coach for people with debilitating back pain.

After about 7 years in the industry, I needed a change. I got into tech in my late 20s. Learned how to code at a Bootcamp in London called Founders & Coders. I fell in love with the immediacy of feedback that comes with writing software. Worked as an engineer for about 5 years. I wasn’t bad but I was never going to be great.

I enjoyed the product side of software work much more than engineering. I gradually began to focus on helping companies improve their user retention metrics. My background in anatomy was quite unique to the space and it helped me think about products from a perspective that’s both technical and creative.

At some point along the way, I began using a tool called Chirr App write Twitter threads. Don’t remember how I found it but I loved it. Reached out to the founder, Sasha Koss, and shared my appreciation. We stayed in touch. A year later he asked if I’d like to join the project as a co-founder. And that’s what I’m up to at the moment.

In just one sentence, please tell us why you want to become a growth mentor?

I was blown away with the quality of conversation I have had as a user of the platform and I would like to give back.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

The reality is, a lot of the time, most of us haven’t got a clue what we’re doing. A growth mindset lets you collectively acknowledge this elephant in the room and it lets you deal with it in a systematic way that improves your odds with the resources available.

The biggest difference between brand marketing and growth is that growth is driven by experimentation. The idea is that you constantly experiment with different ideas, programs, campaigns, features to continually eke out improvements.

There are really two different types of experimentation. The first is testing to discover and the second is testing to optimize. The best way to think about this is like a game of battleship.

The point is that when if you get the coordinates wrong, you still learn something. Over time, you start to get an idea of where those opportunities are. This kind of exploratory ping is a discovery test. When you do hit upon a growth opportunity, it’s safe to assume there’s a better way to do things. The only way to find a better way is to start testing variations. These kinds of tests are optimization tests.

I first heard this Battleship example in a talk by Sean Ellis. He claimed to have stolen it from Brian Balfour so I think it’s safe to steal once again because it’s such a good analogy.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

Using Twitter threads for Social media marketing for businesses, because that’s what the product I’m working on is designed to help people do and it’s all I think about and read about and write about these days.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

I’m in the process of hiring writers to help with tutorials and documentation. Coming up with a good litmus test for how good a piece of writing is, is always tricky when working with new people. I designed a paid practice job where the applicant had to write a post on how to turn an article into a Twitter thread. Once they submitted the piece, I asked them to use the article to turn their submission into a Twitter thread. This was an effective way of getting to the heart of the matter, applicants eliminated themselves and it made finding the best people to work with much simpler.

Hi! I’m Ksenia, I’m 34 years old, and I bring new tech to the world. I worked in videogames and film marketing for 15+ years and, although my skillset is quite broad, I’m particularly interested in solving B2C challenges for digital platforms. Let’s talk!

In just one sentence, please tell us why you want to become a growth mentor?

Many, many professionals gave their time to teach me marketing, so I could master it; mentoring is my way of giving back to the business community.

In your words, what does a growth mindset mean to you?

Evolution is not an architect following a grand design. As Francois Jacob put it, “Evolution is a tinkerer.” ((c) prof. Sapolsky) If iterative development works well for mother nature, why should businesses grow in a different pattern? I just follow what’s natural, adding layers and details – 1 iteration at a time.

If you could mentor a startup on one topic, what would it be?

I would say competitive strategy, as I’m rocking it.

Describe an out of the box solution to a complex problem that made you proud of yourself?

Once everyone in my company gave up on a project, except for the customer support (and me). Instead of making a long deck about “How this is gonna work”, I video-interviewed CS guys about why they believed in the project. “Customers want it, because of A, B, and C”, they said. We convinced the sponsors, we gave it one more shot, pivoted, and it grew into a successful business.
