TL;DR
- Treat your membership like a tool you reach for on a regular basis, not a thing you signed up for and forgot.
- Set one specific goal per call. The fastest way to a good match is our matching wizard, which turns what you're stuck on into the right mentor.
- Don't browse endlessly. Post a help request and let vetted mentors apply to you.
- Do your homework, message before booking, and always follow up. That's where the real value compounds.
- Stuck on what to even talk about? There's a whole section below with real examples.
If you take a few minutes and scroll through the session reviews on GrowthMentor, you will quickly realize that you and your organization can get some real value from 1:1 calls with Growth Mentors.
You really can't get anything better than personalized advice from someone that has been there and done that before you.
How to best harness all of this growth magic can be a bit overwhelming. Does 'too much of a good thing' apply to GrowthMentor?!
To truly get the maximum benefit from the platform, follow this advice, build the habit, and hold yourself accountable to what you talk about.
First, treat it like a habit
Here's day one for every member. The whole job of this post is turning that empty state into a booked calendar.
Ready to tackle your next goal? Find the perfect mentor for you.
Before I get going on the 'how to', it is important to mention that this platform is most beneficial when it is used as a tool. One of the many pieces of weaponry on your growth tool-belt, available to use as needed.
Ideally you'll make a habit of using this tool and really take advantage of the talent that we have collected and pick their brains on a regular basis. A goal can help. Something like:
- I want to book 1 session per week
- I want to focus on one area of growth marketing each month and speak with at least 3 people per area
- I will follow up with each mentor I speak with exactly 1 month later and fill them in on my progress
For many people, it can be a bit awkward getting on a call with someone and discussing YOUR work. Bite the bullet and hop on that first call and each time it will get easier and easier. Remember that all of these mentors are vetted, and 'friendliness' is one of the main factors we look for in Growth Mentors, so there is no need to be nervous.
Building the habit of speaking with unbiased people about what you are working on is a key component of using your membership. Once you reinforce the habit and start to see progress, you may even become a bit addicted to the brainstorming and problem solving that takes place during the calls.
1. Set a specific goal for each session
This is probably the hardest part! When your head is swirling with all of the different facets of growth, how on earth can you prioritize?! Prioritization is one of the most popular topics on GrowthMentor for exactly that reason.
The fastest way to turn a fuzzy goal into a booked call is our matching wizard. You tell it what you're working on and what you're stuck on, and it points you at the mentors best suited to help, so you're not guessing from a giant list. It's the front door most members should start at.
Here's what it hands back, a shortlist you can tune:
Take a look at these mentor profiles and edit & tune your challenge accordingly if you want to see different suggestions.
I want to scale paid acquisition but I don’t know what a healthy CAC looks like for my space
Edit & Tune Results
John runs paid acquisition for e-commerce and SaaS brands on Google and Meta ads, and scaling spend without letting CAC run away is the exact problem he takes calls on.

Daniel is a GTM and growth operator for AI and B2B SaaS companies. PPC strategy is one of his core specialties, and he has pressure-tested growth plans across 395 sessions.

Peter has run demand generation and brand for bootstrapped companies where every acquisition dollar has to defend itself. He will push on whether the channel or the positioning is what makes CAC high.
The beauty of being a member is that you can book unlimited calls, so booking a call just to set your game plan won't cost you a thing. A single 'help me prioritize' session early on pays for itself in the calls that follow.
Avoid jumbling
A mistake we commonly see is a member booking a call without setting a focus. "I want to talk about Facebook Ads, identifying customer personas, and my content marketing plan for a new idea I haven't validated yet."
Narrow it down and really focus on what is most important to you at this stage. It is better for your development as a marketer to really double down on specific areas before moving on to the next.
Remember that the mentors truly want to help and add value. If they see a session request that is all over the place, they may run the other way 😀
Not sure what to even talk about?
This is the single most common thing that stops new members from booking. You know you have problems, but naming one for a call feels hard. So here are real, bookable topics that members bring every day. Pick the one that stings the most right now:
- Positioning. "I can't explain what we do in one sentence." A mentor helps you find the words.
- A channel that isn't working. Ads, SEO, content, cold outreach. Bring the numbers and a fresh pair of eyes will spot the leak.
- Pricing. What to charge, how to package, when to raise it.
- Your first marketing hire. Who to hire, when, and what to have them own.
- The fundraising story. Tightening the narrative and the deck before you walk into the room.
- Activation and retention. People sign up and don't stick. Where's the drop-off, and what fixes it.
- Just prioritization. "Here are my ten worries, which one actually matters?" Genuinely one of the best uses of a first call.
Any one of those is a great session. You don't need a polished agenda, you need one honest problem.
2. Post a help request
When you browse all mentors you may feel like a kid in a candy store. We can go back to that 'too much of a good thing' reference 😉
So don't browse, let the mentors apply to you. By posting a help request, you say exactly what you are looking for help with, and any mentor who feels they are a good fit will apply. It is an anonymous posting, so nobody knows who is behind it. A lot of members love that, especially new users, because it's an easy first step to putting yourself out there.

Let the right mentor find you
Tell the matching wizard what you're working on. It turns your goal into a shortlist of vetted mentors who can actually help.
3. Do your homework
To truly benefit from your calls, it is best to put in some effort beforehand. Do not expect to click around, book a few calls, and have the magical growth secrets handed to you.
We have built very detailed filters for you to find the best fit. Use them! After you have filtered and narrowed down some mentor options, spend some time looking at each mentor's profile.
And don't forget the reviews! The review section tells you what other people spoke to that mentor about, and how it went. It's the fastest way to know if someone is right for your problem before you ever book.
4. Communicate
We highly recommend messaging a mentor before booking a call to check and see if they think they can help you. Be as detailed as possible, without giving your life story 😉
This is where the specific goal comes into play. If you are very specific about what you want to get out of the call, the mentor will be able to easily assess if they are a good fit. If you just write 'content marketing', they'll probably still hit accept, but will definitely be wondering what area of content marketing you'll want to discuss.
They can easily message you about it, but since you are the one reaching out, it's better to lay all the cards on the table right away.
Here's a request a mentor says yes to on sight, x-rayed into the five parts doing the work:
The parts that get a yes
Hi Peter1. I'm a solo founder eight months into a B2B SaaS, sitting at $4k MRR2. I've run cold outbound for two months and it's stuck at a 1% reply rate3. The one thing I keep flip-flopping on is whether to niche down to a single vertical or stay horizontal4. Thirty minutes to pressure-test that decision would save me weeks of second-guessing5.
The greeting
Addressed to Peter by name, with one clear ask. Not the same paragraph pasted to ten mentors.
The context
Who you are and where you are in one line, with a number the mentor can anchor to.
The receipts
What you already tried, so the mentor skips the obvious and starts where you are stuck.
The one decision
One decision, framed as a single fork. That is what a thirty-minute call can actually move.
The win
What a good thirty minutes looks like, so the mentor knows when they have helped.
A strong request earns the yes before the call. It leaves the mentor nothing left to ask.
5. Follow up
Make a habit of following up with the mentors you speak with. Set a reminder in your calendar for a few weeks or a month later, and send them a message when it pops up. Don't hit snooze, just do it.
It helps you stay accountable for what you talked about. Most likely you left your session pumped and ready to take on the world. BUT we all know that shiny objects are popping up everywhere we look, and great intentions and ideas can get lost in the shuffle.
By following up with your mentor, you are now responsible for reporting on how things are going. You had a 1:1 call and formed a bit of a relationship in that time, so following up is the right thing to do. And the mentors are giving you their trade secrets, they genuinely want to know how it went.
Bonus: just ask us
We're usually around on live chat in the bottom right hand corner of the site, so ask us who we recommend for 'xyz'. These mentors were all chosen for a reason and we know who is good at what 😉 Shoot us an email, message us on the member Slack group, whatevs. We are here to help!
