Turn your experience into one clear offer
You can do six things well, so your pitch lists all six and reads like a job description. Buyers hire someone to fix one problem they already feel.
Bring the two or three offers you’re weighing and the last three clients who paid you. A mentor can help you pick the one with a clear buyer, a clear result and a start date.
How should I price my work?
Many independents charge every client the same flat retainer, whatever the work is worth to that client. Each common model answers a different buyer worry:
- A paid diagnostic. A fixed fee for an audit or assessment. A new buyer can test you, and you see the real scope before you quote the rest.
- A fixed sprint. A set result in 30 to 90 days. Easy to say yes to, as long as you write down what is out of scope.
- A retainer. Steady income for ongoing ownership. Agree on what you own, the hours and when the terms get reviewed.
- A day rate or hourly fee. Simple to quote, but it ties income to your calendar and invites buyers to compare you on cost.
- Profit share or success fees. Can win a cautious client, and works only when the result is measurable and you control enough of it.
What if every client so far came from a referral?
Referrals bring the best clients most independents ever get, and they are the hardest to plan around. Move to a new city or lose one contact to a job change, and the introductions stop.
Start with the people who already sent you work: ask what made you easy to recommend and who else they know. Then add one deliberate channel, such as partner firms, targeted LinkedIn outreach or written case studies.
Keep selling while you deliver
Most solo practices sell hard when the calendar is empty and stop the week a project signs. Set a weekly selling routine small enough to keep when you’re fully booked.
The mentors above run their own fractional and consulting practices or specialize in positioning, partnerships and outbound. Pick the one whose practice looks most like the one you want to build.

Before you join
What people ask before their first call.
Look at your last five clients: who paid the most, who was easiest to work with and where you got the clearest result. Your niche is usually the overlap. A mentor can test it against what buyers in that niche pay for.
A fixed, scoped project is easier to sell to a buyer who doesn’t know you yet. A retainer fits the ongoing work once they’ve seen results. Bring your current pricing and one recent proposal so the mentor sees what you actually quote.
Use results from your past roles, with numbers you’re allowed to share, and write up one or two small projects in detail. Some consultants run a first diagnostic at a lower fee to earn the first story.
It can, when the list is narrow and the message names a problem the buyer already has. Generic lists and service menus rarely get replies. Bring your target list, your message and your reply numbers, and a mentor can say which part to fix first.
Your offer in two sentences, your pricing, where your last five clients came from and how much capacity you have. Add a proposal or an outreach message if you want feedback on it.
The session is advice and review. Introductions are up to the mentor, and done-for-you outreach, proposal writing or ongoing advisory work need a separate agreement with the mentor; say what you need in your request.

You don't have a pricing problem. No one understands your offer.
