Meet Thomas Trebbien from Trebo

Q: Can you briefly introduce yourself and your startup?

A: Hi, I’m Thomas Trebbien, co-founder and CTO of Trebo. We specialize in assisting large industrial companies with their waste problems, particularly in sorting various plastic types. Much like metals, plastics need to be separated to maintain their utility in different applications. Our patented technology enables us to sort plastics, ensuring they can be repurposed effectively efficiently.

Q: What inspired this idea for your startup?

A: The inspiration came from our encounter with a major Danish pharmaceutical company. They faced a challenge with the substantial waste generated from injection pens for diabetes, around a thousand tons per year. Realizing the lack of solutions for sorting plastic types, we took on the challenge. Starting with a small prototype, we’ve grown to a 3000 square meter production facility, handling 2000 tons annually. Currently, with 25 employees, we continue to expand, making it an incredible journey.

Joining Plug and Play

Q: How did Plug and Play come into that journey?

A: We were contacted by Nicholas Chow from Plug and Play, who had heard about us and invited us to join the alliance to end plastic waste. Upon applying for Plug and Play, we were fortunate enough to be accepted. It has turned out to be a program that continually benefits us. We receive occasional contact from very large companies, thanks to introductions facilitated by Plug and Play.

Q: Before we dive into ongoing support, could you share more about the application process? Was it challenging?

A: The application process, though a while ago, required a pitch deck and a video explaining our startup. It was a more engaging way to present our ideas, and I believe it made the process more meaningful than just submitting a pitch deck. Overall, it was a manageable experience.

A Day in the Plug and Play Program

Q: What was a typical day like once you got in?

A: A typical day was quite normal, as participation in various activities wasn’t mandatory. Most interactions were online, involving dialogues with a few people from Plug and Play. Primarily, they focused on assisting us with valuable industry contacts.

Standout Features, Program Improvements, on Plug and Play

Q: Do you remember a standout moment or feature of the program? What stood out to you about Plug and Play?

A: The standout feature for us was undoubtedly the connections. Plug and Play provided us with a vast global network, leading to interactions with companies from Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. The ability to tap into such a diverse network has been incredibly powerful and beneficial for our startup.

Q: Was there anything in the program that you think needs improving or something that disappointed you?

A: Perhaps maintaining a more consistent dialogue, like monthly status meetings, could be an improvement. We haven’t been in touch with anyone from Plug and Play for about six months, and having more opportunities for interaction could enhance the overall experience.

Q: What’s the status of your company now, and do you see a correlation between completing Plug and Play and your current position?

A: There isn’t a direct correlation in terms of acquiring large customers through Plug and Play, but being part of their network and the alliance to end plastic waste has certainly raised our visibility. It’s challenging to quantify the impact in specific numbers, but the exposure and connections facilitated by Plug and Play have been valuable.

Q: Do you still feel connected with Plug and Play post-accelerator?

A: While the relationship hasn’t developed significantly post-accelerator, it’s a two-way street. I haven’t actively reached out, and I realize now that it might be worthwhile. The busyness of building and expanding our setup has been a priority, but maintaining connections is crucial.

Advice for Applying to Accelerators

Q: Do you have any final piece of advice for anyone looking to apply to Plug and Play or elsewhere?

A: Absolutely, just do it. Applying to accelerators like Plug and Play can be immensely beneficial. It not only provides valuable support but also offers a unique international experience. The exposure gained is incomparable, transitioning from local presentations to a global setup. The overall experience is enriching and will undoubtedly help your startup in many ways.
