Introduction to CloudNC

Q: Can you provide a brief introduction of yourself and your startup, CloudNC?

A: I’m Theo, co-founder, and CEO at CloudNC. We’re a technology company with a mission to accelerate manufacturing, and we’ve raised over $75m from investors including Autodesk and Lockheed Martin.

Our dream is to create a world where transforming a 3D design into a physical product is as simple as the click of a button. Today, we’re doing that with our software solutions – enabling the metal components on which much of our economy is built to be manufactured much more efficiently than was previously possible.

Q: What experiences or moments of inspiration led to the creation of CloudNC?

A: My journey with CloudNC began back at university while studying manufacturing and mechanical engineering. I became familiar with 3D printers, which were intuitive and easy to use – but when I reached the point where I needed to precision machine metal components with a CNC machine, it was a real shock, because the process of programming and using those machines was so clumsy and difficult, compared to 3D printing. I believe that there must be a way of improving that process with technology, which is where the idea for CloudNC came from.

Q: So, creating CloudNC was a way of addressing a challenge you personally faced?

A: Precisely. It’s tough to maintain momentum and drive when you’re tackling a problem that doesn’t resonate with you on a personal level. Launching and sustaining a startup demands persistence and dedication to issues that genuinely matter to you. Otherwise, the journey becomes too challenging, and there’s a high chance of throwing in the towel. CloudNC is a testament to solving a personal challenge and the perseverance it requires.

Decision to Join Entrepreneur First

Q: Can you share your thoughts on why you chose to be part of Entrepreneur First with CloudNC?

A: Starting a company from scratch is a colossal task and having a strong support system can make a world of difference. For instance, finding a co-founder is crucial; it’s statistically proven to significantly boost your chances of success. Then there’s the matter of guidance. The quickest way to overcome challenges is by seeking advice from those who’ve been there and done that. Moreover, when it comes to acquiring capital, it’s all about connections. Investors are more likely to engage when introduced through a mutual acquaintance. You need that initial entry point into the network. And of course, there’s the critical aspect of mentorship, particularly when it comes to raising funds to kickstart your venture.

Entrepreneur First brings all these elements to the table. It provides access to potential co-founders, expert advice, a gateway to investors, and the mentorship needed to navigate the fundraising landscape. That’s why we decided it was the right move for CloudNC.

Understanding the Application Process at Entrepreneur First

Q: Can you provide some insights into how the application process at Entrepreneur First worked for you?

A: Well, it’s been over eight years since I went through the application process at Entrepreneur First, and I believe it has undergone significant changes since then. However, I think the essence of what they look for in applicants remains the same. Entrepreneur First is on the lookout for individuals who are not just smart and capable but also possess a unique edge – a specific area or field where they excel significantly more than most people. Back then, my edge was my extensive knowledge in manufacturing, 3D printing, and robotics. On top of that, I have been launching small businesses since I was 15, which gave me a strong grounding in entrepreneurship. My co-founder, on the other hand, was a computer science genius. It made perfect sense for us to join forces and start a company that combines manufacturing with cutting-edge technology, leveraging our respective strengths. Entrepreneur First is quite discerning in this regard; they encourage applicants to stick to their areas of expertise. For instance, they would dissuade someone with a Ph.D. in computational neuroscience from starting a dating app, urging them instead to focus on a venture that capitalizes on their unique skills and knowledge. In essence, it’s about identifying your niche, understanding it thoroughly, and using it to your advantage. That’s the key to starting a successful business with a competitive edge.

A Glimpse into the Daily Routine at Entrepreneur First

Q: What does a typical day look like for participants in the Entrepreneur First program?

A: A typical day in the Entrepreneur First program is incredibly fast-paced and revolves around solving a myriad of problems. Since the businesses are in their initial stages, the problems tend to be on the simpler side, allowing for rapid problem-solving. Participants spend their time searching for a suitable co-founder, a process facilitated by the program. They work diligently to validate their business ideas, ensuring they are addressing real problems that demand solutions. This involves directly reaching out to potential customers, developing prototypes, and testing these prototypes with the target audience.

Mentorship is a significant aspect of the program, with venture partners – experienced entrepreneurs themselves – providing invaluable guidance. These mentors are highly involved, offering hands-on assistance to help navigate the complexities of starting a business. For me, the program was a chance to connect with amazing people, some of whom remain investors in my company to this day. Their experience and willingness to share their knowledge played a crucial role in my journey, illustrating the value of learning from those who have navigated similar paths before. In the world of business, there’s always someone who has faced similar challenges, and being able to tap into their experience is invaluable.

Q: Could you elaborate on the involvement of mentors in the program? Were they actively engaged in guiding the participants?

A: The mentors at Entrepreneur First were extremely hands-on, offering a level of engagement and support that was crucial for the early stages of building a startup. Having access to such a rich source of knowledge and experience is one of the great benefits of participating in a program like Entrepreneur First, and it significantly accelerates the learning and development process for startup founders.

Financial Support During Entrepreneur First

Q: Did Entrepreneur First provide any funding to support you during the program?

A: Yes, during my time in the program, each participant received a stipend of 10,000 pounds to cover living expenses over the six-month duration. However, it’s worth noting that this amount was quite modest, making it a bit challenging to make ends meet. Since then, the program has significantly increased the amount of funding they provide to startups. This change reflects a recognition of the financial challenges faced by entrepreneurs and a commitment to ensuring they have the resources needed to focus on building their businesses.

Q: Did Entrepreneur First take equity in your company as part of their support?

A: They took an 8% equity stake in CloudNC. Looking back, I consider it the best deal I’ve ever made. Without the support and resources provided by Entrepreneur First, CloudNC would not be where it is today. Their involvement was crucial in the foundational stages of the company.

Achieving Significant Milestones and Overcoming Challenges

Q: Can you share a significant achievement for CloudNC during your time at Entrepreneur First?

A: A pivotal moment for us was successfully raising funds in two rounds. We secured a pre-seed investment of 150,000 pounds, followed by a seed round where we raised 2 million pounds. These funds were crucial, providing us with the resources we needed to officially launch CloudNC and set the business in motion.

Q: Were there any particular challenges you faced during the program at Entrepreneur First, and how did you overcome them?

A: The journey was filled with daily challenges; it was a constant process of overcoming obstacles. However, nothing extraordinarily monumental stands out to me now, apart from the challenge of raising funds. Raising money was essentially the culmination of solving all these smaller, day-to-day problems. By addressing and finding solutions to each challenge as it came, we were on our way to building a viable business, which ultimately led to successfully securing the funding we needed. That, to me, was a significant milestone and a testament to overcoming the challenges we faced.

Current Status and Future Outlook of CloudNC

Q: Can you update us on CloudNC’s progress and its position in the market post the accelerator program?

A: Absolutely, it has been quite a journey. We launched our software product in June 2023 culminating an eight-year development process. CloudNC operates in the deep tech space, creating solutions that are inherently complex and take a considerable amount of time to bring to market. However, once they reach the market, they offer massive potential, possibly even a monopoly in their niche due to the limited competition and the ability to solve substantial problems. These days, it’s challenging to build a company that experiences explosive growth in just six months; many of the simpler, quicker-to-market solutions have already been developed. What’s left are the more intricate, complex problems that require a longer timeframe to address. However, there are still opportunities for rapid development and growth during generational platform shifts, like the recent rise of generative AI, which opens the door for a new class of businesses and innovations. In summary, while we are now entering a phase of business where the challenges are greater and the development time longer, the potential rewards and impact are substantial. CloudNC is a prime example of this, taking on a complex issue with a long-term development process, but with the potential for significant market influence and success.

Q: What milestones is CloudNC aiming to achieve next, and how has your time at the accelerator program shaped your approach to these goals?

A: Considering the time that has passed since my participation in the accelerator program, our immediate focus is on achieving significant product growth. The program was instrumental in shaping my entrepreneurial journey, providing the necessary support, network, and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of starting and growing a business. The lessons learned and the connections made during that time continue to influence our strategies and approach, guiding us as we strive to reach new heights and accomplish our next set of objectives.

Final Tips

Q: Do you have any advice for individuals contemplating joining an accelerator program similar to the one you participated in?

A: Absolutely. Participating in an accelerator program is a transformative experience, regardless of the outcome. Even if your venture doesn’t succeed, the knowledge and skills you gain during this intense period are invaluable. You will learn more in that short time than in many other phases of your life. On the flip side, if your startup takes off, it’s a double win. You walk away with a thriving business and a wealth of experience. If the business eventually faces challenges, the learning curve you’ve gone through will still leave you better equipped for future endeavors.

So, my advice would be to go for it. Take the plunge. Whether you end up with a successful startup or not, you’ll undoubtedly emerge from the experience richer in knowledge and better prepared for whatever comes next.
