You have the idea but no technical cofounder
You could vibe code it, pay a freelancer or give away equity, and every option looks risky. Decide what to build first and who builds it.

What is the smallest version worth building?
Many founders arrive with a spec of twenty features and customer interviews that point five ways. The first version needs to do one job well for one type of customer.
If you already deliver the service by hand, turn the step you repeat most into software first. Leave the data model for the full vision until real customers use the first version.
Should you vibe code it, hire or find a CTO?
Each route costs you money, time or equity in a different way:
- AI coding tools. Claude Code, Cursor or Lovable get a prototype in front of users fast. You still need to test and fix what they write.
- No-code tools. Good for forms, workflows and simple apps. Custom logic and scale hit the limits sooner.
- A freelancer. Lower cost for a clear scope. You manage the work, the deadlines and the handover.
- An agency. A full team for a fixed project. Ask who writes the code after the first project, and who owns it.
- A technical hire or cofounder. The biggest commitment, in salary or equity, for someone who stays with the product.
How do you hire developers without getting burned?
Bad builds usually start the same way: a vague brief, money paid up front and no access to the code. Agree on milestones, a demo at each one and a repository in your name from day one.
Bring the quote or proposal to the call. A mentor with engineering experience can show you what is missing and what to ask before you sign.
Is your AI-built prototype safe to charge for?
A prototype can carry your first users. Before you take payments or store personal data, have an engineer review the logins, payments, data handling and integrations.
The mentors above include fractional CTOs, MVP builders and founders who build with AI tools. Pick the one closest to the decision in front of you.

Before you join
What people ask before their first call.
No. Many founders test the idea first with a manual service, a no-code tool or an AI-built prototype. A cofounder or senior hire makes sense when the product needs someone full time, and a mentor can help you judge when that is.
Build it yourself if you can test what the AI writes and fix what breaks. Hire when the build needs logins, payments or personal data, or when your time is better spent selling. Bring your prototype and talk it through.
Ask an engineer to review it before customers depend on it. Logins, payments, personal data and integrations are where AI-written code tends to break. Share a demo or the repository before the call so the mentor can look first.
A freelancer suits a clear scope you can manage yourself. An agency suits a bigger project, if the same developers stay on it and the code is yours. Bring the quotes, and a mentor can compare scope, ownership and what happens after launch.
The problem, who pays to solve it, what you have tested so far and your budget. Add any quotes, specs or a link to your prototype.
No. The session is advice and review. Build work, ongoing CTO support or code audits need a separate agreement with the mentor, so describe the help you need in your request.
