Munich Startup Ecosystem

Berlin usually gets all the attention regarding the German startup scene. However, by population, Munich has just as many startups as the capital city, with 14.34 startups for every 100,000 inhabitants. There are currently 1,822 verified startups in the Munich metropolitan area.

The city is known for Germany’s lowest unemployment rate and a large concentration of multinational companies like Siemens. The concentration of business activities in the city has led it to become one of Europe’s leading startup hubs.

There’s a high level of VC investment in Munich, with companies such Finn, a car-subscription startup, receiving $908.3 million in funding to date. Other notable Munich startups with large funding rounds include Air Up, Lime Home, and Campo.

Most of Munich’s funding comes from angels (75%), with software and healthcare the most heavily invested sectors.

Munich’s startups aren’t only receiving high levels of investment, but they’re performing. A recent study by PWC found that 70% of Munich’s startups predict revenue growth, and 40% of those expect double-digit growth.

A highly educated population makes recruiting talent for the Munich startup scene easy. The city is home to the Munich University of Applied Sciences and the Technical University of Munich. Currently, 20% of startups collaborate with the city’s academic institutions.

Munich’s high-speed internet (which isn’t available in many German cities yet) also helps cement its status as an innovation hub.

Initiatives such as the Plug and Play Tech Center connect startups with corporate partners through regular events.

GrowthMentor was built upon the idea that every situation is unique, so generic courses and blog posts just don’t cut it sometimes.

To actually solve your issue you need to connect with someone who’s “been there done that” and have a back-and-forth conversation about the particular roadblock you are facing at this very moment.

Here are some tips.

  • Come into this with realistic expectations. They’re mentors, not magicians.
  • Ask your mentor if they’d be ok with you recording your screen with Loom
  • Give contextual information to help paint the picture of your current situation.
  • Growth mentors will be asking you lots of questions, answer them as openly as possible.
  • Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries of question-asking.
  • Be inquisitive. Stories are gold.
  • Don’t feel pressure, just relax.
  • Try to form mental patterns, especially if you speak with multiple mentors.
  • Embrace alternative views. Ask the mentors to challenge your assumptions.
  • Be friendly. If you’re likable, the mentors will be your biggest supporters (even after the call is over).

Use dynamic filters to find the perfect mentor for you with the right expertise, language, time zone, and availability you need.
