What must a new user do before they’ll pay?
A user signs up, clicks around and leaves before the product has done its job once. Define that job as one tracked action, such as a first report sent or a teammate invited.
Then measure how many signups reach it in the first session and the first week. A mentor can help you test which event predicts paying and cut the steps in between.
Free trial, freemium or reverse trial?
Each model trades signup volume against buyer intent in a different way:
- Free trial. Full access for a set number of days. A card up front cuts signups and tends to raise the share who pay.
- Freemium. A free plan with limits on usage, seats or features. It works when free users spread the product or grow into the limits.
- Reverse trial. Full access for a trial period, then a drop to the free plan. Users see what they lose before they decide.
- Usage limits and credits. Charge as value grows, by projects, documents or API calls. Set the limit where an active user hits it, after a first success.
Where should the upgrade prompt go?
Show the upgrade right after a user gets a result or hits a limit during real work. A paywall shown before any result asks people to pay for a promise.
Onboarding emails do the same job: they bring each user back to the next step. Trigger them on behaviour, such as a stalled setup, and send few enough that people still open them.
When does a self-serve product need a human?
Many solo founders get on a call with every new user, and some find it converts better than the product alone. Keep those calls for accounts with several active users or heavy usage, and let the rest self-serve.
With low traffic, talk to users who stalled before you run A/B tests. The mentors above include growth product managers, PLG and pricing advisors and SaaS operators who have built self-serve revenue.
People who were exactly where you are.
GrowthMentor enables us to swiftly get a world-class expert to give us guidance on any marketing issue or question in a matter of days.

Before you join
What people ask before their first call.
Most never reached the point where the product did its job for them. Check how many signups complete your activation event in the first week. If that number is low, fix the first session before you touch the price.
It depends on the model. Freemium products often convert a few percent of free users, and trials that ask for a card convert far more of those who start. Compare your own signup cohorts over time before you compare against industry averages.
A trial suits products that show value within days and buyers ready to decide. A free plan suits products that spread through use or take longer to show value. Bring your activation numbers and a mentor can help you choose.
In most cases, after the user gets a first result. A paywall straight after signup asks people to pay before they know the product works. If the advice you get conflicts, test both on new signups and compare paid conversion by week.
Your signup, activation and paid numbers by week, your pricing page, a walkthrough of the first session and your onboarding emails. Add what you have tested so far and what happened.
No. The session is advice and review. Build work, analytics setup or ongoing growth support need a separate agreement with the mentor, so describe the help you need in your request.
