It depends on where you are

Every answer here was said to one founder. Find the one closest to you, then read what that founder was told.

You are unsure SEO still matters with AI

The basics still count, because AI tools look at what ranks in Google and read well-structured pages.

Your search traffic has fallen

Do not drop SEO. Keep getting good backlinks and give people a reason to land on your site.

Ram Chaitanya,Rafayel Begoyan

You write blog posts or list posts

Keep writing. Posts that name your brand can get it mentioned in AI answers, even when readers do not click through.

You want AI tools to name your product

Give AI tools something easy to read, like a comparison chart, open docs or an API.

Still worth it

Google still leads, and the same work helps with AI

Said to someone worried they were focusing too much on SEO fundamentals

So much of the same as SEO, I'd say

The only difference is how you measure, because we're seeing so many zero click searches. Then make sure your content is very structured, so tools can parse it correctly.

Said to someone asking if SEO effort should shift to AI referrals

A lot of SEO tactics will work for AI

The way it's looking, AI search is here to stay and will probably replace traditional searching. Click-through rates from the top 10 results are falling across the board. People just go to AI Overviews instead.

Said to a new SEO specialist unsure SEO still matters with AI

I still think it's worth it

SEO, the way I look at it, is no longer search engine optimization, but search everywhere optimization. Have a good website that explains what the company does and what the service is. Then the LLMs will eventually discover you as you start to grow in the rankings.

Said to an SEO hire at a bootstrapped company writing list posts

I think you need to be everywhere

Everything has an impact. Google still has more than 80% of the pie. The very obvious terms, where people mostly just need an answer, are kind of being pulled from tools.

Said to a founder thinking of restarting a blog they'd let slide

To be in ChatGPT, you have to write blogs

Honestly, I don't read blog articles as often as before, and I create hundreds of them a month as an agency. But if you want to be in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, anywhere, you have to write blogs.

Keep it, expect less

Fewer clicks, but do not drop it

Said to a marketer whose SEO leaned mostly on content

Zero click will dominate unless you provide additional value

For lots of the websites I've been working on, traffic has dropped wherever AI overview was picked up, and wherever they were relying more on editorial as a source of SEO.

Said to a content site owner whose search traffic had fallen

SEO is slowly dwindling, but do not kill it

I would also say do not kill SEO. It can still get you some traffic. High quality backlinks are very helpful, ideally over 60 DR but minimum 40 DR. Backlinks will still be very relevant, because it's likely AI answers will have to cite sources. We're still not 100% sure.

Be the answer

Make it easy for AI to pick you

Said to a software company owner losing search clicks to AI summaries

If SEO is a hand, blogging is the fingernail

You shouldn't care whether or not you're in an AI overview or losing stuff to zero click. What we want to care about is whether or not Gen AI is providing you as the answer to a problem, and thereby sending referral and conversion traffic to your site.

Said to a freelance content strategist asking what quality means now

Your website still has to appeal to the human

One thing that works really well is having a chart on your website that compares you directly to competition, and compares you favorably. Agents are going to digest that chart really easily. And when somebody asks an agent what the difference is between you and a competitor, they're going to get a real clear answer. Of course, it's the answer you want them to read, and your competitor's team might find argument with it. That's how you win at AEO.
