It depends on where you are

You run a side business next to a full-time job

Put your best hours into the business, cut your job hours once it gets traction, and check that you enjoy the work.

You push hard and then crash

Recover first, before you start to climb again.

Your progress feels slow and invisible

Treat rest as part of growth, and set if-then rules so a bad day does not turn into a spiral.

Plan the work

Decide what gets your best hours and effort

Said to a new product consultant feeling maxed out by strategic work

Talking to the person that brought you in helps

What I found really helpful is talking to the person that brought you in. I know that may not be the person you're reporting to. I would always circle back with that person: hey, I'm feeling kind of maxed out doing these tasks. Can you help prioritize for me?

Said to a founder building a side business while working full time

Make the most of your time to avoid burnout

When you work on this in your spare time, it's challenging, because you also need time to decompress.

Said to a head of marketing overwhelmed in a small startup

Winging it is not a strategy

You don't have a button that says make the revenue go up. You need to get more customers. For that, you need to be visible.

Build in rest

Growth comes from stress plus recovery

Said to a founder whose progress felt slow and invisible

Stress plus rest equals growth

One thing I love to look at, in business and in my personal life, is if-then statements. They help us pattern our life in ways that make it easy versus hard. If a meeting gets cancelled, then I go outside for a walk. You can build these rules into your life so that when you get into that feeling, you don't start spiraling into it.

Said to someone stuck in cycles of pushing hard, then crashing

For every success you need to pay a tax

I also have periods where I push myself to 300% and then I crash.

Enjoy the game

Like the daily work as well as the win

Said to someone with a day job validating a startup idea

I think you need to enjoy this game

On the rational level, it all makes sense. On an emotional level, it's a completely different story. The business is flying and then all of a sudden an AI company releases something that eats away 50% of your features. You don't sleep very well.
