Bio

"I'm suffering impostor syndrome big time." First, welcome to the human race. If you've never done something before, don't be surprised if you feel: "I don't know how to do this." "I'm really bad at it." "Someone [everyone?] has already done this." This feeling like you're not good enough hits especially hard when you have to price and sell your own services. And if you're already feeling like an impostor, then advice like "Fake it till you make it" will only make you feel more like a fake. (It doesn't work, anyway!) It was hard for me, moving out of IT and into contracting, and then running my own business as a coach. A technical career doesn't give you great preparation for selling, or talking about money. And I know how impostor syndrome can hold people back. It certainly did for me, especially when it came to publishing content on LinkedIn, talking to prospects, sales conversations and going on video. I got advice about how to overcome self sabotage: "Just do it!" or "Don't overthink it!" But that didn't work for me. I needed to understand what was holding me back, and fortunately, that's where my diagnostic skills came in. For the last four years, I've been coaching - mainly women running their own service business - to help them see the value they're bringing to the market. It's funny when you start to see things through the eyes of your client! You see the value you're bringing. You see what difference you're making, and it can give you amazing confidence. And you don't have to "fake it till you make it." My wife and I live in Australia and we have 7 children. I totally love coaching people, especially around helping them see the obstacles they're putting in the way. It's important to treat them with kindness and gentleness, and to give clear next steps.

Expertise

  • Content marketing

"You've got to get your name out there", they tell you. But what should you talk about? What should you write about? And what if you feel it's all been said before (and said better than you can)? I can show you how to choose topics that are going to be valuable for your audience, and also get you excited to write about. And if you need some confidence with video - going on camera for YouTube, for example - I'm here to help.

  • Copywriting

Copywriting, in my view, is less about creating content and more about customer research. Finding out what the client actually wants. Understanding how they describe their own pains. Learning what they really are after (which sometimes they don't know how to express for themselves, because they're too close to it.)

  • Mindset coaching

I know how important it is to break through those blocks that you can experience as you build your business ... especially as you face something new. The key is to see how what you're doing is building on something that you're already good at.

  • Remote work

My YouTube channel started growing when, in 2020, people wanted to learn about how to use Zoom. Their challenges weren't just technical. There was the emotional side of being on camera, and having to navigate tools that would make remote work easier, especially within teams. I pride myself on helping others set themselves up to work remotely and to collaborate as a team.

  • Technology and tools

If you're finding technology and the software you're trying to use is a roadblock for you, I'm happy to help you through it. My YouTube channel has tech tips for people who aren't geeks (and who don't want to be). I don't think the technology should be a reason to hold you back, so I'll show you how to use just what you need for now.

Toolkit

  • Kit (ConvertKit) logo

    Kit (ConvertKit)

I'm familiar with ConvertKit for email automation, and I am happy to share ideas on how to set up sequences and automations, what to write in your emails, and how to keep subscribers coming back.

  • LinkedIn Ads logo

    LinkedIn Ads

I've been very active on LinkedIn for five years, posting several times a week. I know how important LinkedIn is for B2B engagement, and I'm also aware of some of the mistakes people make when they get started on LinkedIn.

  • YouTube Ads logo

    YouTube Ads

My YouTube channel has grown to 3000 subscribers (as at April 2021), and I've learned why some videos do well, and some don't seem to get any traction at all. I LOVE the analytics of YouTube and am deeply immersed in the platform.

Industries

  • Banking

I work on getting IT projects completed successfully. The high risk nature of banking requires careful negotiation for change windows, and very efficient workflows. My strength is in creating systems and workflows for others to adopt quickly.

  • IT Down Under

    IBM Champion for Power Systems

I played a key role in data centre migrations and disaster recovery setup for one of Australia's Big Four banks, a large international mining company, an iconic department store in Australia, and a large manufacturing company in the fire and security industry. I did project work on AIX systems including BAU, migrations, upgrades, DR planning and test runs. I also provided infrastructure support for SAP, Oracle, DB2, WebSphere and other applications. These businesses had IBM Power Systems as part of their infrastructure - either hosted in-house or offsite. However, these IBM systems were deeply integrated with many other applications, databases and work processes. These were all mission-critical enterprise systems that required careful planning, negotiations with non-technical stakeholders. And mitigating business risk in high-stake situations.

A major Australian bank had a multi-year project to move their mission-critical data onto new systems in new data centres. I was deeply involved in the last year of the project. The work involved working with over 8 companies as well as several teams (including non-technical ones). The project was delivered on time and under budget.

  • Luxottica Retail

    AIX and Power Systems specialist

On a short term project at Luxottica to fine tune some of their Power5 and Power6 systems environment. Working with SAP Basis team to maximise system performance. Providing direction and mentoring for TSM, SVC, IBM DS storage subsystems as well as VIO Servers, HMC and AIX LPARs.

  • Wesfarmers Insurance

    Senior AIX Engineer

Green field installation of IBM Power Systems for this insurance company.

  • Tyco Fire and Security

    AIX Consultant

Tyco needed some urgent support to migrate their standalone IBM p5 server to multiple LPARs on Power6. The systems run Pronto on AIX 6.1, and 1500 users as well as dozens of printers required untangling into five different companies' LPARs. I wrote some Perl and Korn shell scripts to make the transition smooth and effective, within tight project deadlines. I have also provided direction on implementing Samba, Kerberos and sendmail.

  • Suncorp

    Senior AIX Engineer

I played a key role in migrating multiple hosts from point solutions on p4/p5 hardware to Power6 LPARs on a p6-570. Implemented boot from SAN for several production hosts. Worked closely with the business and other teams (Storage, DBAs, Middleware) in migrating mission critical systems, following ITIL guidelines.
